Knee Pain

"Help! I have pain in my knees and I have been told there is nothing I can do apart from taking painkillers and rest."

Knee pain is an increasing problem in society and as a result we see more and more patients with knee problems in our practice.

Causes of Knee Pain

Effective treatment starts with diagnosing what is causing your knee pain. We will manually examine all the muscles and ligaments in your knee as well as test for cartilage damage. Arthritis of the knee is quite common an x-ray can help to diagnose if you have this.

The knee can be easily injured by twisting especially when it is bent. This often leads to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) or a tear in the cartilage in the knee. Over-flexing the knee can cause Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) tears and over-pronation (flattened foot arches) can cause accelerated wear and tear causing arthritis or Patello-Femoral Pain Syndrome. Sports injuries regularly involve the knee and can be due to weakened muscles, which leave the knee vulnerable.

Knee pain may be due to a knee problem or may be due to referred pain from the hip or back. We will be able to tell. If you think you may have any of these problems then a thorough examination can get to the bottom of it.
